In 2018, every business using cloud computing services in Europe or servicing European clients has to be GDPR compliant. The new regulation will be set in stone starting in May.

Businesses who fail to comply with the European Commission’s data privacy law will face penalties as high as 4% of their annual global revenue.

The worst of all – most businesses aren’t aware that they are failing to comply, as they are only aware of 10% of the apps and cloud computing systems they are using. And cloud providers often use questionable security practices.

6 Steps Towards GDPR Compliance

6 Steps Towards GDPR Compliance

It is time to act make your business GDPR proof with these 6 steps:

  1. Find out where your apps and management systems are stored and are processing.
  2. Ramp up your security measure to avoid data loss and the like.
  3. Make sure you enter data processing agreements with the cloud apps you are using to guarantee they are GDPR compliant themselves.
  4. Limit data collection to only what’s necessary. Avoid collecting ‘special’ data – such as race, ethnicity, political conviction etc. – and focus only on the data that is necessary to run the app.
  5. Clearly state in your data processing agreement that apps can only use data for the pre-specified purpose. Make sure the T&Cs state that apps cannot share data with third parties.
  6. Once you stop using the app, you must be able to erase the data it has collected. This should also be specified in the data processing agreement.
