When you are migrating your business workflows to the cloud, you need to commit to a specific cloud provider and cloud. Once your infrastructure and applications have shifted and you are using the native services of a cloud – you are couple to that cloud.

Can move your data?

Theoretically, you can move your data again, even after you have migrated to that specific cloud. It will cost you valuable time, money and resources, however. That’s why many businesses hesitate when it comes to migrating to the cloud. This fear of commitment is called cloud lockin.

Lockin trade-off

With every migration, there is a lockin trade-off. There certainly are cloud services available that can be connected to similar platforms and make your data portable. They also prevent your applications and systems from reaching their full potential. Generally speaking, native cloud services of non-portable platforms are much more effective and powerful than their portable counterparts.

In the past, we have been stressing the importance of security practices and governance strategies in the cloud. And this is exactly what you’d be compromising when you let your fear of commitment hold you back.

Is Lockin as bad as it sounds?

Lockin is a price you’ll have to pay to reap the benefits of cloud computing. But it’s really not as bad is it might sound. The benefits of being able to customise applications and make use of native cloud services far outweigh the potential risks that come with the commitment to a certain cloud.

In general, it is unlikely that you’ll be moving your applications again after you’ve migrated once – only in the unlikely scenario that your cloud provider goes out of business or is abusing their power to increase prices. That makes it even more important that you are finding the best cloud provider for you.
