Businesses have high hopes and expectations on the cloud. Operational cost savings, data security improvements, cloud-based innovation, and most importantly, cloud-based agility. But what if the cloud is not delivering the expected results?

There are a few different explanations for cloud-based workload that is too slow. Most cloud performance issues originate from root causes in infrastructure or applications. The first two steps of this guide to identifying cloud performance issues deal with these types of root causes. The last three steps look at root causes that are outside of infrastructure and applications:

Identify Cloud Performance Issues

Identify Cloud Performance Issues

  1. Check the rest of the system. Infrastructure and applications are the usual subjects. Not you must look beyond the obvious. Test security systems, governance services and monitoring services. They can often oversaturate the system.
  2. Test the network. No matter if you are using hybrid or public cloud solutions. Your cloud services are taking up bandwidth and are competing with other processes that are run online. In order to check network performance, you can run ping tests and test cloud-based workload transmission by moving data up and down.
  3. Have a closer look at the hardware. Cloud platforms are run from browsers and computers. A user’s hardware can negatively affect the performance of your applications. Anything from encryption issues to malware can intervene with your cloud-based workloads.
