Data protection is an issue that has always been on the mind of technology based businesses. It is the one thing that keeps CIOs awake at night. Consistently.

And the new data protection law introduced by the EU doesn’t help. The GDPR is going to be effective from May 25th, 2018 onwards. With its far reaching consequences, it is likely to affect the majority of businesses, in and outside the EU.

One of the major changes included in the GDPR regulation is the fact that organisations are now completely responsible for data handling and management.

So, if data gets lost of there is a security breach, you and your business will be liable. Furthermore, subjects whose data is collected now have more rights and can take businesses to court for data mishandling.

Is the GDPR really bad for businesses?

Whilst businesses will have to adjust heavily – and do so now – it might not be all bad. Rather than seeing the GDPR as a nuisance, you should see it as an opportunity.

Customers have been asking for more security in the cloud since the first cloud platform went live. It’s not like this is a new issue. And if there is a demand, a supply will follow. So why not be the supply?

It is always advisable to listen to your customers and hear what their pain points and desires are. One of their desires is security in the cloud, and now the judicial power has made it law. Rather than seeing it as a terrible misfortune, view it as an innovative catch-up.

The GDPR is an opportunity to take your business to the next level and make it more used-centric.

The law forces you to prepare for the next step in our digital era. But you don’t have to do it alone.
